1. Know Your Gear

Being a responsible snowboarder means knowing how to properly handle your equipment. Learn how to safely strap in and recognise your own gear. Not only will this make you look more like a pro, but it'll also help you get prepped for the slopes faster. Don’t forget to check and adjust your bindings—it’s a basic skill that ensures both comfort and safety while riding.

2. Strapping In & Taking Off Your Board

Mastering the art of strapping into and taking off your snowboard is key. And don’t forget to clean off any snow from your boots and bindings—keeping your gear free from snow helps keep things in top condition. Knowing how to use your bindings means you'll be ready to ride as soon as you hit the mountain!

3. Placing Your Snowboard Safely

Safety first! When you take a break, make sure to place your snowboard securely by flipping it over, so it doesn’t slide off on its own. Never use your snowboard as a sledge—it’s dangerous! Keeping your board secure will save you from unnecessary headaches.

4. Balancing & Moving with One Foot

Good posture is crucial for snowboarding. Keep your hands steady and your eyes focused on where you're headed. Getting the hang of your Basic Balance Position (BBP) will help you control your speed and direction with ease. Remember to avoid twisting your body in the opposite direction—staying aligned helps maintain stability.

5. Falling Safely

Falling is part of learning, so knowing how to do it safely is key. Mastering how to fall and get back up will reduce your chances of injury. Relax your body as you fall, and try not to put your hands out, as this can lead to wrist injuries.

6. Speed Control & Stopping

Learning how to control your speed is essential. You can slow down by adjusting your edge, and mastering the stopping technique will help you bring yourself to a halt whenever needed.

7. Straight Glide on a Gentle Slope

Practice gliding on a gentle slope—this is the foundation for beginners. Keep your BBP, with your hands positioned at the front and back of the board. Look straight ahead, and aim for a pace that’s no faster than walking speed. You’ll naturally come to a stop when you're ready.

Basic Snowboarding Skill No. 1: The Heel Side

What’s the Heel Side?

This is a fundamental stance in snowboarding where the rider’s heels press into the edge of the board, with toes slightly lifted. Let’s explore how to master it!

8. Standing Up on Your Heel Side

After a fall, knowing how to flip to the other edge and stand back up is essential. It might take a little help at first, but with practice, you’ll nail it! The key is learning how to get back on your feet comfortably. It’s a crucial step for beginners.

9. Heel Side Traverse

Learning how to ride across the slope on your heel side helps you control your direction by tilting the board. Maintain a balanced body posture and keep your centre of gravity stable, and soon you’ll be cruising smoothly across the hill.

10. Heel Side "Falling Leaf"

The “Falling Leaf” technique is a must for any beginner. It’s the simplest way to ride, teaching you how to control your speed while staying stable and flexible. Mastering this will set the foundation for all your future snowboarding adventures!
